Taking a more personal look at the people behind the deviantART admin symbols.

Grandchild :bulletorange: :icongrandchild:

How did you first discover deviantART?

:bulletorange: That was in 2004 via the folks on the forums at winamp.com.

What was it about dA that made you want to stay?

:bulletorange: "Another place to upload my presets? Yay!!" and soon I noticed that the community was much more involved on here than it was on winamp.com. tuggummi said it plain and simple: "The downloads may be 100x more on winamp.com but you get 10x more and better comments on deviantart." And downloads are nice but comments are much better to keep you tempted to go on and create more :)

What is the story behind your username?

:bulletorange: None, it's the most blatantly stupid one I could think of =P it has the advantage though that it's hardly ever taken when I sign up anywhere, and it's an easy word to remember.

What do you remember of your childhood in regards to art?

:bulletorange: Hm, I used to (and still do) craft all my christmas presents for the family myself, but that's probably about it - I wasn't born with brush-in-hand ;) I grew up without tv though. that helps, I guess. I'm more of a graphics-coder.

Was there anything or anyone in particular that prompted your choice of art form?

:bulletorange: Although he doesn't really know it, it was my cousin who prompted me to use Winamp as a media player (back in 1998 or sth when i had like 20 .mp3-files :D), and eventually I found out that you can actually edit those funky visuals to a large degree! I was hooked.

Who or what motivates you to continue creating?

:bulletorange: Fellow artists, esp. theHuRriC4nE a RL-friend whom i infested with the obsession for Advanced Visualization Studio (the visuals-plugin for Winamp). That was also the very reason we got to know each other better and became close friends. Romantic isn't it? ;)

Of your own work, which has the most meaning to you and why?

:bulletorange: Visualizations are, by their very nature, abstract. You can compare that to fractals. So the art itself hardly ever carries meaning. For me the time I created my second pack of presets
Pack 2 - But how you've grown by Grandchild
was perhaps the time I most enjoyed as an artist. It is hardly the best I did, there is some fine n00b-stuff in there =P and later packs have much higher quality. But it was a great time! :)

What are the duties and title of your role as an admin of deviantART?

:bulletorange: I'm the Gallery Moderator for visualizations on deviantART.com and that means representing the community before the staff and also vice versa. I check the submissions to the gallery (which means downloading and viewing the visualizations) wether they are valid submissions and move miscategorizations to their correct place. Of course being a GM also includes the privilege to feature outstanding submissions as Daily Deviations.

Why did you decide to become an admin of deviantART?

:bulletorange: The former admin yathosho was leaving. He asked me if i wanted to take the position and i said yes, because i have a big interest in keeping the community alive (which is becoming harder, i have to say). Yathosho did great things for the visuals community and of course i didn't want that to fade into dust.

As an admin, what do you want to achieve short term? Long term?

:bulletorange: short term: feature & clean "my" gallery, help and guide new artist.
long term: revive the community, preserve the spirit, and in the far future: update the highly outdated software we use :P

What theatrical movies did you enjoy most?

:bulletorange: Tekkonkinkreet (the most awesome anime), Odyssey 2001, Shawshank Redemption, Matrix, Citizen Kane, Let's Make Money
These are pretty random, I'm sure i forgot one or two...

What films in the deviantART Film Gallery do you enjoy most?

:bulletorange: Well, grandchild.deviantart.com/favo… here are some.

What type of music do you listen to? (Specific groups/artists?)

:bulletorange: I listen to music all the time, after all it's what visualizations depend on.
My fav's are: TOOL, Gentle Giant, Frank Zappa, Tricky, Dredg, The Mars Volta, Björk, Led Zeppelin, Bananafishbones, Tom Waits, Art Of Noise, SoaD, Deftones, and so on....
Electronic music genres I listen to and love to dance to are goa/psytrance, big beat and of course drum&bass. Throw in some jazz here or there, and I'm happy! :)

Which books could you just not put down?

:bulletorange: Recently: Herman Hesse - Narcissus and Goldmund a classic german and very fine short novel.
I highly enjoyed reading Tom Robbins (Jitterbug Perfume) and Walter Moers (German, Stadt der träumenden Bücher) and of course Rowling's Harry Potter. :)

What foods can you just never seem to resist? Drinks?

:bulletorange: Rice pudding, with cherries or apples. Or also with vegetables.

What are your pet peeves on dA and in general?

:bulletorange: On dA? hm, not much. I ignore the trolls, so that doesn't faze me.
But in general i have an aversion to all sorts of small labels that are put/attached/glued/sewn to things. e.g. I rip off the label of shampoo bottles, or I have a strong dislike for shirts with text on it that doesn't mean anything to me ("Dolce & Gabana", "California University Baseball Team '93" or simply "Download 36" :puke: how stupid is that?)
Unfortunately that extends to art as well. As soon as there is some sort of small random text or a signature on the pic (as is often the case in 3D abstract) the appeal of the artwork is mostly ruined for me :(

One fact about yourself that few know about?

:bulletorange: See above. ...And actually, I am from the future. :paranoid:

What tips can you offer to better oneself in his or her art? In life?

:bulletorange: Trial and error.
Make a plan, don't expect it to do it "some time". And even better (I should take that to heart): Do. It. Now!

Is there anything else you wish to say?

:bulletorange: Hey drones! Throw away your TV-set! :bulletorange:

Thank you Grandchild for sharing your grand vision!
